Joy Barton Ph.D. CLP, Managing Director

Joy heads Marquant’s US practice and is the company’s managing partner. Joy has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over 20 years in big pharma (Novartis, Sandoz), biotech (Xenova, Sosei), consulting (Accenture, Andersen) and academic (Cancer Research Campaign) settings.

Joy has experience with large and small molecules transactions, and vaccine transactions, at early and late development stages. Additionally Joy has experience in running successful processes for the divestment of branded marketed products.

She was previously Vice President Business Development at Nabi where she closed more than US$500 million in licensing and divestiture transactions. Prior to Nabi Joy was based in the UK as Vice President, Business Development of Sosei where she headed the global business development function. In 2004 she helped take Sosei public.

Joy was Commercial Director responsible for Corporate Development and Intellectual Property at Xenova UK, a NASDAQ and FTSE listed company. She oversaw out-licensing transactions with an overall deal value of approximately US$600 million.

Before Xenova, Joy worked in the pharmaceuticals and medical products practice of Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting) and specialized in new product development for big pharma and big biotech. Prior to Andersen, she spent time in Basel Switzerland where she held a variety of management roles both with Novartis and in Sandoz’s oncology therapeutic area.

Prior to joining the pharmaceutical industry, Joy ran a translation research laboratory for the Cancer Research Campaign in the UK.

She has a B.Sc. in cell biology from the University of Liverpool and a Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Birmingham UK and is a CLP.

Dean Brown ACCA, Managing Director

Dean leads Marquant’s European activities and brings a wealth of experience providing transaction advice (M&A, corporate divestments, inward and outward partnering of products and technologies and financings) to the life sciences sector. Since the mid 1990’s he has acted as lead or support adviser on countless transactions both small (> $5 million) and large (<$.5 billion) with an overall cumulative value of several billion dollars.


Most recently, Dean was Vice President, Business Development at SemBioSys Genetics Inc, an innovative Canadian biotech, which utilizes oil-based plants to enable the manufacture of hard to make proteins and that is bringing disruptive economics to the manufacture of high volume proteins such as insulin. Under Dean’s leadership, SemBioSys closed nine corporate transactions in 2008/09.


From September 1994 to May 2006, Dean was a director, then partner, with Ferghana Partners, a specialist transaction adviser to the life sciences sector. While there, Dean helped grow the business from its London base with a handful of employees to an international advisory house with offices in

London, New York and Boston.

Dean began his career in the UK accountancy profession and became qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1985. He spent 10 years working in the corporate finance department of BDO Binder Hamlyn providing dedicated due diligence services with regard to M&A, IPO’s and Follow-On Public

Financings.

Dean has a BSc from the University of Loughborough in the UK, and is an ACCA.

Hayley French, Ph.D., Director

Hayley, a Marquant senior executive, is responsible for the firm’s UK and Swiss clients. She has over 20 years of transaction experience most recently serving as senior counsel at the Basel headquarters of Novartis Pharma AG. While at Novartis, Hayley focused on transactions concerning phase 1 through 3 clinical stage assets.

Prior to Novartis, Hayley was an IP transactional lawyer in the life sciences group of Bird & Bird, London where she provided counsel for a range of biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry clients. Her client portfolio also included a number of spin outs.

Before Bird & Bird, Hayley was Head of Commercial Legal Affairs at the Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research in Salisbury UK, where she was responsible for numerous early stage transactions. Additionally, Hayley spent five years at University College London Ventures where she was responsible for the commercialisation of inventions in the life sciences sector.

A well known lecturer and trainer for the Licensing Executives Society (LES), Hayley is currently, co-chair of the LES International Education Committee.

Hayley is a graduate of the University of Liverpool, with a B.Sc. in Microbiology and has a PhD in Microbiology and a M.Sc. in intellectual property from the University of London.

Shin Kitaoka B.Sc., MBA, Executive Director

Shin leads Marquant’s Japan and Asia Pacific business activities and spends approximately 50 percent of the year in Japan and Asia Pacific. Shin has over 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He is an expert on Japanese drug development, and is a well-known speaker on issues concerning drug development and partnerships with Asia-pacific companies. Shin has experience in all therapeutic areas and a special interest and strong track record in oncology and infectious disease, and in preclinical and early stage clinical assets.

Shin is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BioGemini where he focuses on transaction associated relationship building between client senior executive teams and C-Level Japanese executives. BioGemini’s contact network allows for Marquant’s clients to have access to the entire cadre of Japanese pharmaceutical and biotechology executives. Additionally, BioGemini has strong relationships
with many transaction associated board level executives.

Prior to BioGemini, Shin spent 25 years at Glaxo, Glaxo Wellcome and GSK. He lead business development in Japan for GlaxoWellcome R&D and was the first Japanese national to be employed at the company’s Greenford UK, headquarters.

Shin has a B.Sc. from the University of Tokyo and an MBA from the London School of Economics.
